Shocking news for people who sit down while working

Research results came out that indicate that people who sit for long periods every day have a higher risk of death than people who only sit for short periods.

On the 26th, Health Day News reported that at Sydney Australia’s graduate school of public health, lead researcher Hidde van der Ploeg’s study of 22,200 people titled ‘over 45 years old’ revealed this fact.

According to this research, people who sit for over 11 hours a day are 40% more likely to die within 3 years than people who sit for under 4 hours a day. Even people who sit for 8-11 hours a day are 15% more likely to die than people who sit for under 4 hours a day. These results take into consideration the participants’ physical activity, weight, and health condition.

The group that spent the most time sitting and the least time physically active were 2 times more likely to die within 3 years than the group that spent the least time sitting and the most time physically active. In the least physically active group, people who sat the longest were 30% more likely to die within 3 years.

62% of those studied were overweight or obese. This is comparable to American averages. 25% sat for 8 hours a day. 87% thought that they were taking care of their health or were very healthy.

However, some people pointed out that because the research period of 3 years was relatively short and subjects may have had undiagnosed health problems, the accuracy of the analysis is limited. The more you sit, the more likely you are to be sick, obese, or have cardiovascular disease.

These research findings were announced in the American journal Archives of Internal Medicine on March 26th.

I really thought this was considered “science fact” a long time ago.

The latest information on the best way to remember something

Research has revealed that new information presented right before sleeping is better for remembering it. This means that it is effective to finish things like school test preparation or business presentation preparation right before going to bed.

A research team from the American university Notre Dame used 208 people who regularly get 6 hours or more of sleep a night in a study to learn about the relationship between sleep and memory. They tried to get the students to remember a few word pairs. The word pairs were either related or unrelated in meaning. One group memorized the words at 9am and the rest memorized the words at 9pm. After 30 minutes, 12 hours, and 24 hours, the research team tested the students on the word pairs.

The group that studied at 9pm and went to bed did much better on the 12 hour test than the group that studied in the morning and stayed awake all day. There wasn’t any difference between the groups for the word pairs with related meanings, but there was a big difference for word pairs that had unrelated meanings. Even after the 24 hour test, when not much time had passed, the group that studied in the evening had better scores than the morning group.

The leader of the team, Professor Jessica Pain said, “Our results showed us that if you go to bed after learning something new, you will remember it better”. This same research was published in the Public Library of Science (PLOS One) Journal and was reported in the English newspaper Daily Mail on the 27th.
